Prep & Tips for your

Sparwood & Fernie Photos

Are you curious how we can make your Sparwood, Elkford, or Fernie 'photoshoot' go even better? â€‹

The challenging nature of working in the mountains means there's a few things for us to consider when planning your pictures. The Elk Valley is such a stunning place for your portraits but there's a few things we need to be prepared on. Whether you're prepping for a family session, maternity shoot, or graduation portraits, a little planning can go a long way in making your experience smooth, relaxed, and unforgettable.

Each of my clients receive a full Welcome Guide that is packed with information on how to have a successful session... but I want to share a few tips with you here right now!

Dress for the Season—And the Scenery

Sparwood and Fernie have a range of seasonal beauty—lush summers, snowy winters, and crisp golden falls.

Think about the landscape colors when choosing your outfits. Earthy tones, soft neutrals, and textured layers photograph beautifully here.

Bring extra layers for warmth, as we are in the mountains where temperatures shift quickly.

Even the most cute summery outfits can't compensate (in your images) if you are freezing during your session.

Let the Kids Be Kids

If you're planning a family session, don't stress about perfection.

Some of the most authentic moments come from letting kids explore, laugh, and move naturally. We’ll work with their energy, not against it.

Wear shoes you can walk in

Many of the most beautiful spots in Fernie and Sparwood require a bit of walking—sometimes over uneven ground or trails.

Comfortable shoes (even if you swap them out for photos) make the whole experience more enjoyable.

Especially for longer or family sessions, small comforts go a long way. A water bottle, a couple of snacks, and a cozy blanket to sit on can keep everyone happy and relaxed.

Trust the process (and me)

I’m here to guide you every step of the way—whether it’s posing tips, location choices, or just helping calm last-minute nerves. My goal is to make you feel comfortable and to capture your story as naturally as possible.

Fall colors and summer wildflowers are high-demand times in Fernie and Sparwood. With how much snow the Elk Valley receives, it's very standard that I do most of my work in the summer and fall months. Booking early ensures you get your ideal date and gives us plenty of time to plan something perfect for your family.

Bonus: Book in Early!
